Fresh and flavorful Cilantro Mint Chutney, also called Green Chutney is a delicious accompaniment to most Indian food. A no-cook dip like condiment, that can be made in about 5 minutes!

Cilantro Mint chutney is an earthy herby condiment that is very popular in Northern and Western Indian cuisine. It is a delicious dipping sauce made with cilantro and mint as the main ingredients and is an accompaniment that goes on most all chaats ( a nachos/salad like variety of Indian street food), like this Pakora Chat and is served alongside samosas and pakoras.

You can also spread it on wraps like this Garam Masala Paneer Naan Wrap or serve with Paneer Tikka or Chicken Tikka. The possibilities of how you can use this chutney are just endless.

Ingredients for Cilantro Mint Chutney

  • Cilantro - one of the main ingredients in this recipe that gives it the bright green color and one of the major flavors in this chutney
  • Mint - the second main ingredient in this chutney. Though, some people prefer way less mint-y flavor and more cilantro in their chutney. You can add a little to begin with and add more if you want more mint flavor in the chutney.
  • Thai Green Chillies - The heat in this chutney is not very forward, but we still need some heat for balance and these Bird’s Eye Chillies do just that.
  • Cumin seeds - add a smoky layer of flavor to this chutney
  • Garlic - this is an optional ingredient. I love garlic in Cilantro Mint Chutney but a lot of people skip it too.
  • Ginger - it gives an earthy heat to this chutney and is a required ingredient for this recipe.
  • Lime - gives that tang that rounds off all the other flavors in this chutney.
  • Salt - regular salt or black salt can be used.

How to make Cilantro Mint Chutney

  1. Add all the ingredients to a blender or food processor jar. I prefer smaller blenders like NutriBullet or the small 8 oz jar of Vitamix, unless otherwise you are making seriously large quantities.
  2. Add about a tablespoon of water to help get the blender started.
  3. Blend till smooth.

Variations for Cilantro Mint Chutney recipe

There are many recipes for this chutney, based on every individual home cook’s preference. A little more of cilantro, a little less of mint, garlic or no garlic etc.

A common variation is the addition of yogurt in this chutney. I generally prefer not to add yogurt when I make this chutney as I feel the flavors to be diluted when yogurt is added. But I do add yogurt when I am running low with the chutney and want to stretch it. When you are making this chutney, if for some reason, you added more heat to it, you can always tone it down with some yogurt.

Storing tips for cilantro mint chutney

  • Glass jars are preferred to store this chutney. I love my weck jars for this.
  • Seal the jar tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • You can also freeze this chutney in the freezer, if absolutely needed. But, fresh chutney is always the best as the fresh flavors and the zing are the highlights of this chutney.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cilantro
  • ¼ cup mint
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 inch piece ginger
  • 2 Thai green chillies
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • ½ lime
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • Add the cilantro, mint, cumin seeds, garlic, ginger, salt and chillies to a small personal blender or food processor jar.
  • Add a tablespoon of water to get the blender started.
  • Grind to a fine paste.
  • Move to a serving bowl or storing jar, squeeze juice of half a lime into it and mix well.

Notes

Use a small blender jar like NutriBullet or the 8 oz jar of Vitamix for making this chutney. In a large regular sized blender the ingredients will get lost and wont grind well.
