Nutella in hot chocolate is probably the next best thing to heaven. A hot cup of this Nutella Hot Chocolate is all you need to warm your body and soul, this winter and all winters to come.

Nutella. It needs no introduction right. Well, if I have to introduce this magical food to you, then you and I can’t be friends, sorry!

Nutella is something I can just eat straight out of the jar. Anytime I use it on toast for me or for the kids, I dip the knife in one more time to scoop some up to eat just like that. Don’t tell me I am the only one who does that.

I don’t think there is anything so heavenly and magical, straight out of a jar, like Nutella. Ok, maybe, just maybe, salted caramel. But that’s it.

Now imagine, adding this to your cocoa powder and milk to make a delicious creamy Nutella Hot Chocolate. It’s what all dreams are made of. I am not kidding.

This Nutella Hot Chocolate is

  • Dreamy and decadent
  • Creamy chocolate goodness
  • Warms your body and soul
  • Loved by all

Ingredients for Nutella Hot Chocolate

  • Nutella – of course! You can use any chocolate hazelnut spread, but Nutella is Nutella and you just don’t get the same taste without it.
  • Cocoa Powder – unsweetened Dutch processed cocoa powder is what I used in this recipe. This helps us control the sweetness in the end.
  • Whole Milk – always use whole milk for hot chocolate recipes. Hot cocoa is meant to be creamy and comforting and whole milk is the only way to achieve that.
  • Vanilla Extract – this adds another layer of complex flavors to this drink. Nielsen-Massey is my favorite brand of vanilla extract.
  • Hazelnut syrup – this is completely optional, but it enhances the Nutella flavor with its nuttiness.
  • Granulated sugar – just a teaspoon of granulated sugar per cup of hot chocolate just to make sure the sweetness is intact. If the sweetness from Nutella is enough for you, then skip this.
  • Whipped cream and marshmallows to top – we love to get holiday special marshmallows like this snowman marshmallow for hot chocolate we make at this time of the year. But, any marshmallows will do.

How to make Nutella Hot Chocolate

  • Reserve about ¼ cup of milk and whisk in the cocoa powder to the rest of the milk.
  • Whisk in Nutella in the reserved milk and pour it into the cocoa powder milk.
  • Bring this to a boil and then simmer for a few minutes.
  • mug with nutella and a spoon in it
  • mug with hot chocolate and a spoon in it
  • saucepan with hot chocolate and a whisk in it
  • hand pouring nutella into a saucepan with hot chocolate
  • Add the sugar and let it dissolve.
  • Turn off the heat and add in the vanilla extract and hazelnut syrup, if using.
  • Strain and pour into mugs and top with whipped cream and marshmallows.
  • hand whisking hot chocolate in a saucepan
  • Vanilla extract being poured into hot chocolate in a saucepan

Tips for making the best Nutella Hot Chocolate

  • Use good quality cocoa powder. Buy an organic brand if possible.
  • Use whole milk and not skim or reduced fat milk. The creaminess from whole milk is also what makes this hot chocolate so decadent.
  • You can serve this as it is or spike it to make it an adult friendly hot chocolate. Frengelico, Kahlua, IIrish Cream or Creme de Cacao are some of the liqueurs you can add to this.
