Whenever I order cocktails at a bar, and I can't really decide by looking at the menu, I just go for anything with bourbon in it. It's become my go-to cocktail. Like a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
I was always under the impression that a sour cocktail has egg whites in it and that just somehow made me uncomfortable. I mean, it's not breakfast right?
And raw eggs in a cocktail. That just felt downright icky.
This all changed after I took a series of cocktail classes the last couple of months. Bar manager Erik from Seaplane Kitchen and Bar and Stoneburner in the Seattle area taught us how to make classic cocktails, sours, punches and many more.
That is when I first made and drank a sour with egg whites and actually LOVED it. And second, I realized that when you say a “sour” cocktail, it is not necessarily always with eggs. It is basically alcohol, sugar and lemon/lime. The lemon/lime is what makes it a sour. That right there is a basic whiskey sour recipe.
The whiskey sour I learnt at the class was one with egg whites and it was delicious. But this one is a twist on that without the egg whites and I replaced simple syrup with maple syrup and added some cinnamon to make it fit for the holiday season.

Maple Whiskey Sour ingredients
- Whiskey - we love bourbon in our cocktails as it is sweeter. Knob Creek or Bulleit are our favorite brands.
- Lemon - freshly squeezed lemon juice is best. This is what makes it the sour.
- Maple Syrup - this is used in place of the simple syrup in a basic whiskey sour recipe.
- Cinnamon - to add some of that fall / winter sweet warmth to the cocktail
- Angostura bitters - this is optional. But a few splashes of it rounds off the taste of the cocktail so perfectly.

Tips to make a really great whiskey sour
- This goes without saying. But use a good quality whiskey or bourbon that is at least 90 proof alcohol.
- Use real maple syrup and not pancake syrup. That is not maple syrup, sorry!
- Make one cocktail at a time. The measurement and the mixing works better when you are making one at a time.
