An easy no sugar added watermelon margarita recipe that is made with just 4 ingredients. Refreshingly fresh in every sip!

Summer is almost here! Well, almost is really the keyword for us in the PNW when we really can't be sure of warm weather till July comes.

We love all the summer fruits - the berries, peaches and watermelon. Our household goes through fruits very quickly  any time of the year. But summer is really another pace altogether. We can all easily survive the summer months with the fresh, juicy fruits itself.

Watermelon is devoured in all forms and fashion. We slice it up to enjoy it fresh as it is. We add it to salads. Sometimes we sprinkle a touch of chat masala on fresh cut watermelon and enjoy them like that.

The kids love watermelon juice. I also make this delicious watermelon lemonade in summer. For us grown ups, a fresh watermelon margarita is always on the cards in summer.

Some of our other favorites summer drinks are:

  • Watermelon Ginger Masala Lime Soda
  • Homemade Strawberry Lemonade
  • Mango Iced Tea Lemonade

We also love these refreshing cocktails -  Grilled Pineapple Chili Margaritas, Coconut Lime Margarita, Mango Margarita with Ginger and Mint and Blood Orange Mimosa with Rosemary and Vanilla

We love this Watermelon Margarita because

  • It is made with fresh watermelon.
  • You need just 4 ingredients to make this.
  • There is no added sugar to this cocktail as the sweetness of fresh watermelon more than makes up for the absence of any added sugar.
  • It doesn't take any more than 3 mins to shake up this delicious watermelon and tequila cocktail, especially if you already have fresh watermelon juice in the refrigerator.

Ingredients to make fresh 4-ingredient watermelon margarita

  • Watermelon - fresh, sweet, in-season watermelon is best as we are not adding any sugar to this cocktail, so all sweetness and flavor depends on the base of a fresh watermelon. Buy an even rounded watermelon and look for sugar spots (little black spots) on the melon. This indicates a sweeter watermelon.
  • Lime - fresh lime is always recommended to make a fantastic cocktail.
  • Tequila - I recommend a white / blanco tequila for this recipe. Casamigos or Patron Silver are my favorites.
  • Triple sec - you can use Triple Sec or any other orange flavored liqueur like Cointreau or even Grand Marnier.
  • Ice
  • Lime and salt to rim the edges of glass, optional but highly recommended

How to make watermelon margarita

The method is as easy as measure, pour, shake, strain, drink.

  • Measure out the ingredients - watermelon juice, lime juice, tequila, triple sec
  • Pour the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice.
  • Shake well.
  • Strain into glasses filled with ice and rimmed with salt
  • Sip and enjoy!

How to salt the rim of a margarita glass

To salt the rim of a margarita glass, you can buy margarita salt if you want. But honestly, I don't think it is worth the money to buy another kind of salt just for this.

If you use kosher salt for your everyday cooking, then that is a perfect salt to use for rimming. If not any other regular salt will do. Don’t stress over it too much and please don't buy a salt just for this, only to use it once and be stuck at the back of the pantry for eternity.

Quarter a lime and run a lime wedge along the rim of your margarita glass. Pour salt in a small plate, enough to cover the plate well.

Now, press the rim of the glass down while still wet and move it around to make sure you get salt all along the rim.

Recipe notes:

We love to make this watermelon margarita on the rocks. But if you prefer it frozen, then you can make frozen watermelon margaritas by measuring and adding all the ingredients with ice in a blender and blend to make your drink.

You can also use frozen watermelon cubes to make the frozen margaritas.

Some fun variations to this recipe

  • Rim the glasses with some Tajin or chili-lime seasoning to get an extra kick.
  • While serving the margarita on the rocks, instead of ice cubes, use frozen watermelon cubes instead. You can eat them once you are finished with your drink. And they look pretty too.

I love to enjoy this drink with a Spicy Mexican Corn Salad, Masala Papad or some chips and Strawberry Salsa. It's the perfect way to enjoy a summer afternoon.
