I have been making rainbow snack plates for V since he was a toddler. Now he is a 7 year old and has a toddler sister but he still LOVES anything rainbow and especially rainbow snacks.

When I used to make these snack plates just for V, it was not this elaborate as it was for just one person. Also, I always did not have so many ingredients to put together. We would just pick one snack item of each rainbow color and arrange on a plate in the shape of a rainbow with marshmallows at either end to be clouds.

But now that there are two of them and the two of us adults at home, I made it a bigger rainbow snack platter instead. I was afraid there would be too much leftovers after I had put out everything, but no, the entire platter was wiped clean by all of us.

This rainbow snack board is not only fun to look at and eat. It is also so very easy to put together. You just need to plan ahead to make sure to have a variety of food in the different rainbow colors. That is all.

This is a kid friendly rainbow snack board that has a variety of different things to please everyone and has so much nutrients in it as well. It's rainbow colored and it's a snack, so while the kids are distracted by that, this is the perfect opportunity to sneak some extra goodness in the platter. If you think that the wholesome snack is the bonus from this, think again. The big bonus as a parent is that this is zero effort!

Other kid friendly food that I make very often because my kids love them:

  • 5 Ingredient Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cereal Bar
  • Frozen Yogurt Covered Strawberries
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly Cracker Sandwich

How to make a rainbow snack board?

  • All you need is a large enough platter or a cheese board to accommodate at least seven kinds of snack type foods.
  • Add a variety. Make sure to have fruits, veggies, cheese, crackers, dips etc
  • Here are some examples of foods in the different rainbow colors
    • Violet and Blue food - Blackberries, blueberries, grapes, blue corn tortilla chips, purple cauliflower florets
    • Green food - green grapes, cucumbers, green peppers, guacamole, green olives, snap peas, kiwi, celery sticks, granny smith apples, honey dew melon, spinach artichoke dip
    • Yellow food - yellow peppers, sliced bananas with skin, mild cheddar, most crackers, hummus, tortilla chips, pineapple, queso dip
    • Orange food - orange peppers, carrot sticks / baby carrots, sliced oranges or orange wedges, cantaloupe, mangoes, apricots
    • Red food - strawberries, raspberries, watermelon cubes, cherries, pomegranate, cherry tomatoes, cranberries, raisins, strawberry cream cheese
  • Arrange about 2-3 foods, at least, from each color group in the order of the rainbow colors on to the snack plate. Place dips in small containers next to the same colored food.
  • Serve right away or depending on the foods on the platter, assemble, cover with a plastic wrap and keep in the refrigerator till it is time to serve.

Looking for recipes for dips? Here are a few favorites

  • Restaurant Style Tomato Salsa
  • 2 minute Smoked Salmon Dip with Dill and Capers
  • Jalapeno Cheese Dip ( you can skip the jalapeno or substitute with poblano or even green bell pepper to make it more kid friendly)

Tips for making a Rainbow Snack Board

  • If making this for your kids’ friends or other kids, make sure to keep common allergens like nuts, dairy etc in a separate platter. It will be best to check with all parents to know about any allergies, so if you can avoid those snacks altogether, that will be better.
  • Depending on the age group that the snack is made for, make sure to cut up foods like grapes, cherry tomatoes etc. And also watch for foods like tortilla chips which may not be easy for everyone to bite and eat carefully.
  • You can make ahead the platter, cover and refrigerate it. Or you can prep all the ingredients and keep them in the refrigerator and put together the platter in a matter of just a few minutes at the time of serving.
  • This can be assembled or arranged as a Rainbow Snack Bar and have the kids serve themselves. This will be more suited for a party like situation rather than for snack time at home.
  • As always, when putting together food for kids, use your best judgement as a parent and check with other kids’ parents. What I have here is only a guideline.
